The second year of Casting for Recovery-South Dakota has continued to build on last year’s success, holding a second successful retreat and announcing a grant award as the chapter continues to positively impact the lives of women impacted by breast cancer.
Casting for Recovery-South Dakota held their second retreat this past weekend, October 4-6, at NeSoDak Bible Camp near Waubay, South Dakota. The second annual retreat was a tremendous success and received high praise from both participants and organizers.
The Casting for Recovery retreat offers an opportunity for women impacted by breast cancer to experience healing and renewal through fly fishing, nature, and community. The first event was held in Custer in 2023, with this second event heading to the opposite side of the state as the program’s impact continues to grow across the state.
The sentiments of the retreat were shared by the South Dakota chapter in their Facebook post.
“Our Casting for Recovery-SD retreat last weekend was such a meaningful experience! So many new friendships were formed, and the memories we made will be cherished. From moments of healing to the peaceful time spent fishing, it was a weekend filled with connection and joy. Grateful for everyone who joined and made it truly special!” read the post.
The South Dakota chapter is led by Sandy Richter, who helped bring the program into South Dakota.
“Words cannot adequately describe the love and joy this program brings to my heart,” said Richter. “My cup is overflowing with gratitude to our CfR team – volunteers, participants, staff, and supporters!”
Following now two highly successful retreats, the program continues to gain traction across the state. The chapter today announced they have been awarded one of the Black Hills Area Foundation’s Thriving Community Grants.
“This support allows us to continue empowering women through our unique retreats. We are grateful for the support from our community and excited to keep making a positive impact in the lives of women throughout the region,” said Casting for Recovery-South Dakota in a Facebook announcement.
Casting for Recovery-South Dakota was the focus of this year’s Tuesday Night League Season for the Lip Ripper Fishing boys, who raised both awareness and money throughout the tournament season.

“This past season was dedicated to raising awareness and support for Casting for Recovery,” said Nick Harrington, Owner of Lip Ripper Fishing. “This program is a tremendous success, and I’m proud we were able to play a role in helping showcase the impact this program has on these women.”
The boys donated $1 for each pound brought to the scales throughout the Tuesday Night League season, culminating $102.51 for a total donation.
“I want to thank everyone who supported us, matched our donation, and helped share the message about Casting for Recovery in South Dakota,” concluded Harrington. “This is what makes our state, our sport, and our community so powerful and seeing the impact this program has makes me extremely proud to be a part of it.”
