Anglers fishing on Lake Sharpe need to be aware of major projects slated for West Bend Recreation Area, which will impact access to the area throughout the remainder of the fall.

West Bend Recreation Area Marina to be Dredged

South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks announced beginning Monday, September 21, contractors will be dredging the boat ramp marina at West Bend Recreation Area. This project will likely be completed in early December.

This means that the West Bend boat ramp is closed to boaters and anglers throughout this time. The nearest alternate boat ramp is Joe Creek Lakeside Use Area.

The bulk of the fishing in the fall on Lake Sharpe takes place in the upper end of the reservoir closer to Fort George Lakeside Use Area, Farm Island Recreation Area, Downs Marina, Fort Pierre City Ramp, and Oahe Downstream Recreation Area. These ramps should remain open and available for anglers throughout the fall season.

However, West Bend Recreation Area offers the primary boat ramp for anglers wishing to fish further down the reservoir and it is important for anglers to plan ahead due to the limited boat ramp options in the area.

Campground and Shoreline Projects

In addition to the marina project, two other projects will also take place at West Bend Recreation Area throughout this time. Comfort Station #1 will see an addition, and Campground #1 will see a shoreline protection project.

Due to these projects, camping access is closed in this campground, and three out of the four cabins.

Cabin #4 is still available for reservation, and Campground #2 and #3 remain open as well.

While these closures are inconvenient, they are necessary for the long term enjoyment of the area and both anglers and campers will enjoy the benefits of these projects in 2027.
