The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) today announced the main ramp at Lake Thompson State Recreation area, sitting on Lake Thompson near De Smet, will be temporarily closed to the public for a complete boat ramp replacement.
“This ramp will be closed beginning October 2,” stated Adam Kulesa, GFP Parks Planning Administrator, in a press release. “We expect the project to take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete depending on weather conditions.”
Anglers will still be able to access Lake Thompson. Access remains available at the Lake Thompson Lakeside Use Area on the northwest side of the lake. There is also access available at the Lake Thompson Southwest Public Water Access, also known as Jerry’s Access. Additionally, there is a primitive ramp through Schaeffer’s Slough from Lake Thompson Recreation Area.
While these temporary closures can be a short-term pain, the long-term impact is a ramp that is ultimately much better for anglers and boaters to enjoy.
