The Kanaga boat ramp on Waubay Lake is set to see some major improvements this fall. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) today announced that the Kanago boat ramp would be closed for maintenance, beginning Monday, September 18.
Currently, the boat ramp has an inconsistent slope, which means that anglers have to back their trailers much farther into the water to be able to successfully launch their boats. The ramp also experiences major issues with siltation.
This fall, GFP is completing a project that will replace both lanes of the boat ramp. The new ramp will be put directly on top of the previous ramp, which will fix the slope of the ramp so anglers can back their trailers to much more desirable depths to launch their boats. The new ramp will also fix the problem with the heavy siltation.
Waubay Lake is a very popular fishery in northeast South Dakota, but there are still options for anglers to launch their boats while the Kanago ramp is being worked on. The recommended location to launch would be the Grenville Ramp, located on the north side of the lake.
The Kanago ramp project is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete, which means anglers should expect to make plans to utilize an alternate location to launch throughout the fall. This temporary inconvenience will pay off, as there will be a much more quality boat ramp ready to use for the 2024 season.
