A new program in eastern South Dakota dedicated to creating and empowering female anglers made waves throughout the summer months and is continuing to build momentum for recruiting additional female anglers to the sport of fishing.
Ladies, Let’s Fish was a pilot program started by Cassy Behnke, a naturalist with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP), which focused on providing a supportive, women-centered environment focusing on teaching fishing skills to both new and novice female anglers.
“Encouraging women to participate in fishing is critical for our sport,” said Nick Harrington, Owner of Lip Ripper Fishing. “This program was a unique way for women to learn from their fellow female anglers and develop skills that they’ll be able to use throughout their entire angling journey.”
The program covered every aspect of angling including purchasing a license, rigging equipment, both basic and advanced angling skills, as well as cleaning and preparing catch. Other aspects of fishing such as backing a trailer and operating a boat were also covered as well.
“The testimonials from participants were truly incredible,” continued Harrington. “Women from all angling backgrounds were able to build their skills, gain confidence on the water, and most importantly have fun.”
The program earned Behnke the 2024 Innovative Programming Award, which is an annual award given by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.
“I am just so proud of Cassy, she is a tremendous asset to the outdoor industry and has personally contributed to many individuals beginning their angling, hunting, and outdoor journeys,” concluded Harrington. “This is who she is, how she spends time with her family, and her passion pours into everything she does.”
Ladies, Let’s Fish is continuing to build momentum in South Dakota and individuals should be on the lookout for an upcoming Ladies, Let’s Ice Fish in the coming winter. Additional Ladies, Let’s Fish events will likely be coming across the state as well.
