After waiting a week to kick off the Tuesday Night Walleye Fishing League season in Pierre, the first week is in the books! High winds and storms forced the cancellation of Week One, which set April 23 as the first week of the 2024 season.
Heading into the first week, the boys were pretty confident they had a good bite going. The upcoming Sharpe Showdown, which is April 27-28 in Pierre, had the boys wanting to hold back a little bit in showcasing their “A” and “B” spots, but Monday evening felt they found a bite that could produce a Top 5 finish.
The boys, and the rest of the field, were met with minimal flow from the dam and overall a very tough bite. The dirty water flowing from the Bad River forced the entire field to head north out of Downs Marina and focus on fishing between the Bad River and the dam/stilling basin. When there is minimal flow from the dam, this can make these spots very difficult.
The fish overall were very inactive in many of these spots, but there were certain areas that did produce fish for a handful of teams and they were able to put together very good weights. These weights have the boys confident for the weekend’s Sharpe Showdown and they are expecting some big weights to be brought to the scales Saturday and Sunday.
The boys were only able to bring two fish to the scale, bringing 3.85 pounds, which was good enough for an 8th place finish in the difficult bite conditions.
Tuesday Night Walleye Fishing League Week One Top 5:
- 1st Place: Buechler/Clark 11.15 pounds
- 2nd Place: Hostler/Stoeser 8.45 pounds
- 3rd Place: Bible/Towley 7.95 pounds
- 4th Place: Engelhart/Hinker 7.85 pounds
- 5th Place: Kogelmann/Merrill 7.60 pounds
