Zorinsky Lake is a highly popular recreation area location in Omaha. Zorinsky is enjoyed by runners/walkers, bikers and features numerous other playgrounds and ball fields surrounding the lake. For anglers, fishing can be good out of Zorinsky, especially through ice.

About the Lake

Zorinsky Lake is roughly 250 acres, but can reach depths over 30 feet deep. Zorinsky is found on the western side of Omaha, Nebraska in Douglas County. Species present include largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, walleye and channel catfish.

Lake Structure

For structure, key in on submerged weeds and rocks. Many of these weed beds can be found very deep and hold fish all through the ice season, but especially early ice. For shallow structure, docks and rocky shorelines are also options as well. A pronounced main basin will hold fish throughout the entire ice season.

Ice Fishing

Locating fish in the expansive basin can be very difficult, so drilling holes is key. You may drill over 50 holes, but only catch fish out of 5 or maybe even less. When drilling holes, vary your depths. You may find fish as deep as 32 feet, but on the same day you may also be able to find fish in 22 feet as well.

Look for submerged weeds or grass on the bottom as you search. If you find this element, be sure to give that hole some time. Often, fish won’t be too far away. The bluegill and crappie will often be mixed in together, regardless where you are depth wise. Competition is a key factor in coaxing fish to bite, generally when there is one single fish it will be very passive. However, when there are multiple fish on the screen competition is high and fish will often strike aggressively.

For presentation, the fish can be very picky. Small pink or white tungsten jigs are strong options. Tip these with Trigger X Mustache Worms with one tail pinched off. Wax worms or spikes can also be good options, especially when fish are even more finicky than usual.
